You'll begin with essential basics, which form the building blocks of the language. Soon you'll create new sentences on your own, using words you've learned. Have Fun Best of all, Rosetta Stone is addictive. With every entertaining activity, you'll feel success. You'll want to use Rosetta Stone to have that next moment, that next breakthrough. So you'll keep using it, and you'll learn more! That's language-learning success. That's Rosetta Stone. No translation or memorization required. The most effective way to learn a new language is to be surrounded by it. When you were an infant, your parents taught you this way, by intuitively associating words with images. That's the ultimate language lab, but most language-learning programs completely ignore this. Think about all of the ways you've tried to learn a language: classes at school, tapes and cassettes, even software that uses your native language as a base for your next one. What do they all have in common? Translation and memorization.
Instead of taking a "direct flight" from your brain to your new language, translation and memorization connects you to your old language. You always have to "fly" from your brain, to your native tongue ... and then translate what you've memorized to communicate. That might work for a few words, but what happens when you get to a sentence or phrase? When you have to change tenses? You're going to make a lot of "connecting flights." That's why those other methods are so frustrating ... and why they fail. Enter Dynamic Immersion. This method encourages you to think like a baby. You'll pair words with vivid, real-life images and make connections between things you know and the new language. Soon, you'll be thinking in a new language, stringing words together into phrases that you create. Innovative technology. Rosetta Stone places this Dynamic Immersion method at the core of a suite of software that works with you to develop your skills. The simple, intuitive interface helps to keep you engaged in the solution, while advanced speech recognition technology makes certain that you're speaking correctly and accurately. Best of all, Rosetta Stone never leaves you behind. You'll only move forward when you're ready, when you've become comfortable and confident. Communicate and connect with the world: Level 1, 2 & 3 Set. Rosetta Stone Level 1, 2 & 3 Set will take you on a journey from the basics to a whole new level of sophistication. You'll build a foundation of fundamental vocabulary and essential language structure. You'll quickly gain the confidence to engage in social interactions. Say "hello" and "goodbye," arrange travel, order food, go shopping and more! From there, you'll share your ideas and opinions, express feelings and talk about your life, your interests and more. You'll discover a voice. In a new language. Audio Companion With Audio Companion, you'll enhance the Rosetta Stone experience wherever you go. You'll learn new skills on the computer, and then reinforce what you've learned with Audio Companion. Simply play the CDs on a stereo or download them to a MP3 Player. Complete rip off !!!! August 26, 2010 Robert A. Vignato Jr. (St. Augustine, FL) I purchased RS French 1,2,3. I then purchased Chinese 1 (Which btw is impossibly difficult and poorly thought out). After trying to install it
on my MAC Book, neither will run! I get a 2122 error. Their support is terrible. It's
the type of thing where they put you on hold and transfer you and it never gets
solved... I'm out over $500 bucks!
My advice... Skip Rosetta Stone software... Too expensive for what is delivered. Not
to mention compatibility issues with different versions of their software and the
fact that they're terrible at supporting it.
Not Great As A Main Learning Program May 18, 2010 Charlemange (Fort Washington, Maryland United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Rosetta Stone Chinese is an okay tool to use along with a tutor or other learning program, but not so much as a main learning source. There are no English translations and the sentences that you learn are not really useful in practical situations. I do think this program is better suited for children, as they will absorb the info more easily than an adult and may find matching the text to images fun.
The program allows you to learn from photos and uses pinyin. It also allows you to choose between traditional and simplified Chinese characters. It does not however, teach the importance of tones and proper pronunciation. Chinese should not be taught the same way as Spanish or Italian would be taught. There are a lot of words in Mandarin that sound the same but the tone of the word will make a huge difference on how you communicate.
If you are learning Mandarin for the first time, I recommend Fluenz, which is a much better program and much more worth the money than Rosetta Stone.
A disappointment May 3, 2010 May Khadem (Glencoe, IL) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had heard so much about this program and tried so hard to use it, but finally had to give up in frustration. There are so many better ways to learn Mandarin. I finally settled on Pimsler and found it much more enjoyable and easier to advance quickly. I don't think this program works well for Mandarin. It is tedious with poor return on the vast amount of time it demands. I got through all three levels of Pimsler and began another language program before I could plow through the tedious lessons of level I on Rosetta Stone. I bought all three levels with the intention of completing them all, but finally gave up.
Rosetta Stone Mandarin Chinese, 1,2,3 Expensive... but may be worth it. March 21, 2010 Writesoon (NJ) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I often pass the Rosetta Stone kiosks in airport terminals and hardly see a customer there. How do they stay in business? I suppose the answer to that is the same answer to the joke about the panhandler on the corner selling pencils. When someone comes up to him and wants to know how much a pencil is, he is told $100. The person says that amount is ridiculous. The panhandler comes back with "Well...I only have to sell one pencil."
Yes...all the Rosetta Stone products are expensive, very expensive. However, Chinese is probably the hardest language I ever tried to learn. This product did help, but I barely scratched the surface. First you need to learn a completely different alphabet. Then you are told that the same word means different things depending on the tonality of what you say.
Rosetta Stone in combination with speaking with someone else every day works. You need to practice out loud (which is why the microphone is so important). It's not like Spanish where you can memorize a few things and function.
The first month using this I felt confident...until I tried to understand the news reader on the Chinese TV. Seems like she was talking too fast. Then...in the second month, she was so nice to me since she slowed down her words. (No..she didn't slow down, I was catching on of course.)
The best way to learn Chinese is to immerse yourself in the Chinese environment. You either sink or swim; and most people do learn how to swim. However, should you spend almost $500 on this? That depends on how far you want to take this. It will help, but in the end you need to put the work in to master the language.
Discover or rediscover Mandarin! March 8, 2010 Jenlee (Mountain view, CA, USA)
I'm born in Taiwan but brought up in Sweden. I've lost much of my Mandarin and the older I get the more I forget and the more I've regretted I didn't listen to my mum, who tried her best to maintain my Mandarin skills. But I'm finding out it's never to late to start a new, or to rediscover, a language.
As I'm only using the program to learn vocabulary and speech, I can't accurately review the reading and writing part of the program. Also, my ears are still very sensitive to the different tones used in Mandarin but I'm not sure how sensitive the program is. It should be, as this is a very, very important part of speaking Mandarin.
But overall, I'm pleased with the program and I'm finding it very enjoyable.
