We love all the Mei Mei video's. March 24, 2007 I cannot say enough good things about the Mei Mei series! I think we bought them all. My kids have definitely learned some Chinese from them.
I also recommend the Mei Mei cd, too. They're great, too. The songs are very catchy.
Plus, we also bought this gorgerous "ASIAN AMERICAN BERENGUER GIRL DOLL" from EBAY, and my daughter absolutely loves to play with the beautiful doll and watch her Chinese dvd's.
No glitz, but pretty good instruction February 24, 2007 As a bilingual (Spanish/English) teacher of English Learners, I can appreciate the positives in this video, even if I was surprised at the low-budget quality of the actual video production. I like that it is slow and repetetive enough (almost too much so) that we can understand the sounds and actually see Mei Mei's mouth to help us know how to form the words. And while I agree that it's good to see non-Chinese kids learning and having fun, it seemed like too much time watching them engage in the activities without being able to hear and repeat the words. I also think the "why all girls?" question is very valid. And really, is it that hard to make a better quality video?
I did question why some parts are SO repetetive while the songs are harder to learn because the subtitles are in English and there is no opportunity to repeat the lines before the next line comes. My suggestion would be to teach it in pieces, line by line, with an opportunity to repeat.
All in all, my son (5 1/2) enjoys the video and watches some parts of it over and over.
good for learning pronunciation April 15, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I thought this video was as excellent learning tool. It gives a method of teaching that is sometimes forgotten in second language learning -- the importance of both seeing and hearing the pronunciation of words. Except for the very young, simply hearing the pronunciation of a word in a new language, is often not totally effective. You can repeat over and over again and still be repeating the word both incorrectly and unintelligibly. Anyway, both my child and I love this video as well as Mei Mei's volume 2 and 3, and have watched them many times.
My 2 year old loves it! January 19, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My 2 year old loves this video. She requests to watch it and it keeps her mesmorized. Even more important she is learning...after watching it just a few times she was able to count to 5 and was saying hello in Chinese...now she's able to count to 10 and sings along with the songs as well. She loves watching the little girls and hearing them speaking. This video is also done in a very 'real-life' manner and proceeds slowly - which I feel removes most of the dangers of TV watching for this age.
not too bad, not too good January 12, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We watched it once and hope to play it again. My 2 year old liked it ok.
But neither she nor my wife nor I have wanted to watch it again. It is more like a duty than a pleasure for me.
