4 out of 5 stars A Nice Effort   December 28, 2008

You gotta give them credit for at least trying to do something "different" with this movie. Even if it was just having some tubby goon play dress-up with Jason's mask (and it being the ONLY Friday where he's got blue triangles on his mask, despite how many masks get destroyed), it was sort of a change from what we've seen in the last 2 sequels (parts 3 & 4). Sort of in the sense that it wasn't at THE lake, but some "special" camp for troubled kids. But since we think it's Jason the whole time doing the killing, the joke is on us. Maybe that's what people are really upset about, or maybe I'm just reading too deep into it. The Nightmare series got stale real quick (parts 4 & 5 being the worst), and so they decided to go back to the FEAR of Freddy in the last couple; that sort of worked too.

Others have compared this movie to Halloween III, and rightly so. From what I've heard of the Halloween series it was supposed to have 1 or 2 with Michael Myers in it, and the series to focus on other horror elements with a Halloween theme, hence the first film taking place during Halloween. So when H3 came out (as well as Fri-5) people were upset at the change. They knew what they liked and expected to see something they were familiar with: the same-old thing of nudity, blood, death. And though this film had those elements they felt it just wasn't the same. I felt it was a good change that they could have easily gone with in various directions. But, alas, since then they've made drastic changes to the series such as Jason X, & Jason Goes to Hell, to try and explore different roades, people just don't seem to get it. They feel like, "Sorry, folks at Paramount, just feed us the same bags of blood we're used to. Don't mess with the formula, the ingredients. We don't go to a horror/slasher flick for the theme, we just like to watch people die."

Just want to make it clear that I liked this movie, not loved it, & not hated it. It was a good change to the series that gave us viewers that needed rest from the "man" in the goalie mask. For from The Final Chapter he died as a man, and Jason Lives he rose again as an unstoppable force of evil. This movie was very important to the series as a whole ... even the later ones.

3 out of 5 stars Overrated   December 24, 2008
FRIDAY THE 13TH-PART 5:A NEW BEGINNING is a so-so sequel, since it basically has nothing to do with the first 4 FRIDAY THE 13TH's with the exception of Tommy Jarvis(John Shephard) who gets placed at a nut farm in a small peaceful community called Pine Hurst that ends up getting turned upside down by an eccentric paramedic who starts impersonating Jason Voorhees after his son(Dominic Brascia) gets killed at the Pine Hurst mental health facility and tries to convince everybody that Jason is back and not dead by trying to relive Jason's killing MO.

In addition to that, the synopsis of this movie indicates that Jason is back with hockey mask and all and that "If you liked the first four FRIDAY THE 13TH's, you'll love FRIDAY THE 13TH-PART V: A NEW BEGINNING", which I didn't find to be the case, because I didn't like Part 5 nearly as much as I liked the first 4, since it wasn't even scary, it didn't have Jason, it wasn't nearly as heart-pounding, nor as suspenseful as the first 4 either, plus the music scoring done by Harry Manfredini wasn't as catchy nor as heartpumping as the music was in the first 4 either.

In addition to why I didn't find FRIDAY THE 13TH-PART 5 nearly as satisfying as the first four FRIDAY THE 13TH's is because Part 5 didn't take place at Crystal Lake and had no mention of Crystal Lake or even Jason's mother(Pamela Voorhees)either, but my hunch is in Part 5, Roy had been inspired by Jason to do the same sort of thing by killing off all the people he could kill in Pine Hurst to avenge the death of his son Joey(Dominic Brascia) just like Jason did to all his victims at Camp Crystal Lake to avenge the death of Jason's vengeful mother Pamela Voorhees(Betsy Palmer).

Therefore, Paramount and director(Daniel Steinmann) had apparently decided to give the Jason Voorhees character and Crystal Lake location a break, since the Jason character was probably getting tired & burnt out and too predictable and decided to change the killer and location in this movie to make it less predictable and to keep us guessing and wondering more about how the killing spree was going to happen and convincing us that the killer wasn't even Jason in this movie until the conclusion when Roy dies off after a horrendous scuffle at a farm with Pam(Melanie Kinnaman), Reggie(Shavar Ross), and Tommy Jarvis(John Shepard) just before the Sheriff(Marco St. John)reveals the whole true story to Pam about who was the real killer all along and that Roy was using Jason's MO as a front for his murders and that Joey was his long lost son who Roy had abandoned at child birth and that the homicide of Joey was Roy's whole motive in the string of mass murderers in Pine Hurst.

Therefore, you could say that FRIDAY THE 13TH-PART V:A NEW BEGINNING was like HALLOWEEN III:THE SEASON OF THE WITCH was to HALLOWEEN I and 2, since HALLOWEEN 3 had absolutley nothing to do with the first 2 Halloweens, since they didn't even mention Michael Myers, Laurie Strode(Jamie-Lee Curtis), Dr. Loomis(Doanld Pleasance), Sheriff Brackett(Charles Cyphers), or even Michael Myers hometown(Haddonfield, Illinois) for that matter either, which was why HALLOWEEN III flopped at the box office in 1982 just like FRIDAY THE 13TH-PART V did in 1985, but I guess that's why Paramount had decided to make sure that this movie included "A New Beginning" as part of the title to this sequel to make sure that this movie and sequel fit up to its name kind of like HALLOWEEN 3 did by including "The Season Of The Witch" in its title as a warning that HALLOWEEN III was definetly going to be different from HALLOWEEN I & II, just like FRIDAY THE 13TH-PART 5: A NEW BEGINNING was definetly going to be different from FRIDAY THE 13TH Parts 1,2,3, and 4.

Since HALLOWEEN 3 and FRIDAY THE 13TH-PART 5 both fizzled at the box office, it obviously inclined Paramount to bring Jason Voorhees back in FRIDAY THE 13TH-PART VI:JASON LIVES in 1986 to relive his same pattern, location, and MO in Camp Crystal Lake and producers to bring Michael Myers back in HALLOWEEN IV:THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS in 1988 by returning to his hometown(Haddonfield, Il)to relive his killing rampage that he committed 10 years ago.

Additionally, I guess part of what FRIDAY THE 13TH-PART 5 was all about was even though Tommy Jarvis killed Jason as a child, Jason wasn't dead in spirit and that you can't really kill fundamental evil and that it's always going to be with us one way or another, which was probably why they had somebody else impersonating Jason in Part 5 along with the fact that Tommy Jarvis was still traumatized by the aftermath of killing Jason as a child and still hallucinating about Jason and having nightmares about him even after so many years.

What's kinda funny about this is even though FRIDAY THE 13TH-PART 5 had more killings, more blood, more sex, more nudity, and more cussing than the first 4 had, it still wasn't as freaky or as creepy, especially since FRIDAY THE 13TH-PART V wasn't even scary, unlike the first four were, but I guess director(Daniel Steinmann) had decided to overcompensate by giving FRIDAY THE 13TH-PART 5:A NEW BEGINNING a higher body count than the first 4 FRIDAY THE 13TH's.

2 out of 5 stars A slap in the face of all loyal Friday the 13th fans   November 3, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

Maybe someone will write a dissertation on why some horror movie franchises eventually have that one movie that basically sticks a middle finger down the throats of its fans, betraying everything the whole series has been and should be about. Friday the 13th Part V - A New Beginning may well be the worst offender of the bunch. When a slasher film has to painstakingly explain itself at the end, you know it has some serious problems. It's bad enough that the very concept of the film reeks with utter stupidity, but these characters? It's like one of those rabid anti-horror fanatics wrote the script with the express purpose of turning horror fans off so much that the Friday the 13th series would quickly wither and die.

Some people defend the film by saying it's still a maniac in a hockey mask killing people in gruesome ways, but I'm here to tell you that the blood and gore in this film is close to pathetic. Not once do we actually see an actual death blow: someone gets stabbed in the stomach and we see a shot of his face looking down and grimacing; a guy gets beheaded and all we see is an incredibly fake head hitting the ground; etc. If the special effects of all the scenes cut to avoid an X rating were this unimpressive, they might as well have left them in there. The least they could have done was make "Jason" look like the real deal - if he doesn't look like Jason, if he doesn't walk like Jason, he's not Jason.

The opening scene of this film is actually pretty good, even though it does feature a cameo appearance by Corey Feldman (whose commitment to The Goonies kept him from truly reprising his role as Tommy Jarvis - that role went to John Shepherd). After that, though, look out below. It has been three years since Tommy bested Jason in Friday the 13th The Final Chapter, and he's still pretty messed up about the whole ordeal. He has now left the mental institutions and come to Pinehurst, a halfway house for those with mental and emotional problems trying to ease their way back into society. The place basically has no rules and no discernible method of treatment or counseling, which helps explain why one of the patients brutally murders another one shortly after Tommy's arrival. The next thing you know, someone starts killing off characters in rapid succession. Has Jason somehow returned to life and set about on a brand new killing spree?

There is a great deal I dislike about this "new beginning," but nothing sticks in my craw as deeply and uncomfortably as the characters of Ethel (Carol Locatell) and her halfwit son Junior (Ron Sloan). They live near the halfway house and don't like having a houseful of mental patients so close to them. The problem is that these two are way beyond even the most cliched hillbilly characters you're ever likely to find. Some viewers like them because they are the only things even close to entertaining in this mess of a film, but I say their presence herein makes for vivid proof that director Danny Steinmann and the writers just didn't care.

I really can't point to even one good thing about this lamentable chapter in the Friday the 13th series. It's a stupid story with idiotic characters, unimpressive gore, absolutely no suspense, no effort to deliver a single scare to the audience, and a horrible two-tiered twist ending. Much like the infamous Dallas dream season, this entry in the Friday the 13th series is best forgotten.

3 out of 5 stars A decent entry, nothing more...   October 28, 2008

A New Beginning is like the ugly duckling of Friday the 13th movies. Universally hated by fans for not having the real Jason. The way I see it... Jason is as Jason does. The killer here wears a hockey mask and his kills are brutal. That he turned out to be a copycat is of little consequence. It is certainly more faithful to the franchise than 'Jason Goes To Hell', which really did mess up with the formula. So my own problem with 'A New Beginning' wasn't really with the story twist, it's the fact that the movie doesn't really stand out. The characters aren't particularly likable, and the kills aren't all that spectacular (except for maybe the flare-to-mouth one).

3 out of 5 stars Fun to be had   October 16, 2008

We have a little mystery brought back into the Friday the 13th series this time. Jason's spirit dominates the movie from beginning to end.

We follow Tommy Jarvis from the previous sequel, all grown up now. He is suffering the after effects of his one time meeting with Jason. He has a vacant look throughout the movie that indicates he has some disturbing things going through his mind.

Tommy moves into a house for the mentally challenged. He is surrounded by young people who are suffering their own mental handicaps.

Night soon falls and murders begin to take place. The murdering continues into the next day and we are all left with the question of why they are happening and what connection Tommy has to it.

We are introduced to many wild characters along the way. There is the unbalanced Tommy to start. There are some goofy characters in among the mentally challenged. The randy couple look destined to be murdered in nasty ways. All of the characters thus far seem to be ready for the axe.

There are plenty of funny moments throughout this movie. Tommy's fight scenes are especially funny as he goes off without warning. The one guy eggs Tommy on as he grabs the guy and suddenly flips him over onto a table. Then later, he erupts and bursts out some kung fu on a goofball character. There is the scene with the guy in the port-a-potty that is bizarre yet comical. There is a hick woman whose foul mouth is on display here.

There are long drawn out stretches in between the kill scenes which only adds more chances for intentional and unintentional humor throughout the movie. Plenty of interesting characters inhabit this movie and get disposed of along the way. Its worth a look. Maybe even a couple of looks.
